When I was unemployed I felt like I was lost at sea. I felt helpless and afraid of my uncertain future. That was until I decided to use CPR to bring my career back to life. Not the first aid CPR, but one that saved my life just the same.
C – Be The Captain Of My Ship: I knew if I was going to have any success in finding employment, I would have to take control of the situation. Plot the course of where I wanted to be employment-wise and research the companies I had a desire to work for.
P – Be Prepared. Once I knew where I was going, I had to be prepared for anything that could come my way. I spent my downtime networking with people to bring more exposure to myself. I did freelance work when things were tight financially. When I stumbled onto a last-minute job opportunity, I had an updated resume already prepared and ready to send. When an interview opportunity came up, I practiced with a partner to give me more confidence in selling my skills.
R – Be Resilient. It was hard and I got knocked down consistently. In the words of Les Brown, “When you get knocked down make sure you fall on your back; because if you can look up, you can get up!” Despite many setbacks, I did not bring my past failures into the present. I continued to remain in the moment knowing that the job would eventually be mine. Within a short time I was hired!
By being the Captain of my ship, being prepared and being resilient, CPR saved my career.
