Part 3 – Final Episode of “Is Your Voicemail Greeting Betraying You? It Could Be Costing You A Job!!”

As we said before, to a hiring manager there is a world of difference between “The Message” you record and “The Impression” it leaves. Finally, I have an example of what a professional voicemail greeting should sound like:

THE PROFESSIONAL:

The Message: “You have reached the personal voicemail of ________. Unfortunately, I am not available to answer the phone right now. At the tone, please leave your name, number and a brief message and I will get back to you as soon as I can.”

The Impression: Yes, I’ve reached the person I’m looking for. This person sounds professional and responsible. I’m leaving my contact information and hope to hear back from this applicant soon. I’m looking forward to our meeting!

The Bottom Line: Take the time to leave a professional voicemail greeting that clearly states your name and that you will return their call. Do not let a flawed voicemail greeting put you out of the running for your next job.

My Challenge to You: Find a quiet spot and record a greeting that will reassure recruiters that they’ve made the right decision to contact you for an interview. Have someone you trust listen to your message and give you constructive feedback.
